The United States Mint certifies these coins as genuine George Washington Gold Coins, struck in accordance with legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President on October 20, 1996, as Public Law 104-329. These coins were produced by the United States Mint to help supplement the Mount Vernon Ladies Association's endowment to provide permanent support for the preservation of George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. These coins are legal tender of the United States.
Ms. Gardin Fraser's design features a right-facing portrait of George Washington on the obverse, while the reverse shows an eagle with wings spread wide. Dr. Cornelius Vermeule, author of "Numismatic Art in America" called the design "one of the most spectacular ever to be prepared for a U.S. coin."
