    The American Buffalo is honored on the first release of a proof medal series produced in celebration of the 130th Anniversary of the establishment of the Smithsonian National Zoo. Authorized by President Grover Cleveland in 1889, the Zoo was started with just a small herd of buffalo and a golden eagle. This 2019 Smithsonian Zoo Buffalo medallion is struck from 1/4 Troy oz. of .999 fine gold by the Commonwealth Mint, its mintage limited to just 500.

    The reverse illustrates a magnificently detailed buffalo ambling across a dirt landscape, with an artistic sky and sun above, the inscription "FOUNDING OF THE NATIONAL ZOO" curving below.
