The 2020-W Barbara Bush Gold Proof coin is the 42nd release of the U.S. Mint's First Spouse Series. A product of the West Point Mint, the 26.49 mm diameter coin is struck from 1/2 Troy oz. of .9999 fine gold, with a mintage limited to only 3,000 pieces.
The obverse features an incredibly detailed portrait of Barbara Bush, designed by Benjamin Sowards and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, surrounded by the inscriptions "BARBARA BUSH," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY 2020 W" and "41st 1989-1993."
The reverse design exemplifies the First Lady's belief in the strength of literacy as a life skill. Symbolizing knowledge and literacy as the key to a bright future, a path to the rising sun is depicted as a guide to a person reading a book. The design by Barbara Fox and John P. McGraw includes the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "," "1/2 OZ." and ".9999 FINE GOLD."
This 2020-W First Spouse Barbara Bush 1/2 oz. Gold Proof coin is presented in ungraded, GEM Proof condition. The gorgeous coin is encapsulated and housed in a Mint branded, custom-crafted, domed and lacquered hardwood chest. The coin includes a Certificate of Authenticity adorned with a classically styled sepia-toned photograph of the First Lady.
