This 4" , 100mm. calipers comes in a protective hard case with a fresh battery (a common watch battery, LR44, SR-44, 357)  AND a spare ! It is very accurate and reads down to 0.01mm or 0.0005". Once you use a digital caliper, you probably won't ever want to use a mechanical vernier or dial caliper again, because the readings are instantaneous with no margin for error. This is the best choice for the novice as well as the experienced user.
One thing you can do on a digital caliper that you cannot do on a mechanical is this: If you have two objects you are measuring and want to know the difference in size between the two, just measure the smaller, push the "zero" button, then open the jaws to accommodate the larger. The new reading on the display will be the exact difference between the two. That means you do not have to calculate that figure, the caliper has done it for you.  Very Handy!
