Kinemetrics SMA-1 Seismic Recorder 3-Axis Seismograph Accelerograph Seismometer

Up for sale is one Vintage Kinemetrics SMA-1. This Seismometer appears to be complete except for an optional battery pack and operating key. This Seismic Recorder would be a great piece for nostalgic use or as a historic show piece. It is quite an amazing device to examine with all of its intricately designed parts and tiny mirrors and would make an excellent conversation piece.
This 3-Axis Optical Electromagnetic Strong Motion Accelerograph quickly became the worldwide standard with nearly 8,000 sold. Most of the early significant strong motion recordings were made on SMA-1s. The SMA-1 is an analog strong motion accelerograph equipped with 3 sensors of +/- 1g full-scale sensitivity. The sensors sensitivity can optionally range ½, 2g. The SMA-1 frequency response from DC to 25 Hz. Time series are analog photographic files stored on a 50 foot film roll. The recording resolution depends upon the film quality. Timing system for events time identification is optionally TCG-1 or WWVB clock systems. The SMA-1 can be operated as a single unit, or interconnected in sets of several units for multi-channel applications.
